RARE CANDY (c, 2, Twirling Candy–Bold Pegasus, by Fusaichi Pegasus) led wire to wire to capture his second career start Sunday at Del Mar and become the fifth winner for his freshman sire. The dark bay began his career with a second place finish sprinting five panels over the lawn at Belmont June 7 for owner and trainer Steve Asmussen. Privately purchased following that effort, he was tabbed as the 2-1 favorite and went immediately to the front to set the pace through fractions of :23.51 and :48.68. Asked for more turning for home, he spurted away from his challengers and reported home three lengths ahead of runnerup Osceola Pond (Cape Blanco {Ire}). The winner hails from the extended family of GISW and sire Salt Lake (Deputy Minister). Rare Candy, a $22,000 KEESEP yearling, RNA’d for $47,000 as a OBSAPR juvenile offering. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $57,000. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
